Yam

Home / Origin:

The yam is cultivated mostly in tropical and subtropical regions. The worldwide cultivation area is approx. 6.2 million acres, including approx. 5.7 million acres in Africa. About half of the annual production is harvested in Nigeria.

Description:

This starchy tuber is as much a staple for the native population, as the potato is for Westerners. However, its cultivation is more difficult than the potato and it is not as tasty.

Marketing :

The yam is available year round and may be stored for some time at 13° C.

Use:

Yams are peeled and then boiled or steamed. In principle, the yam can be prepared using all the methods for the preparation of potatoes. This tuber is attractive due its slightly sweetish taste.
