Cherry Tomatoes

Home / Origin:
The original home of the tomato are the Andes regions of South America. Brought by Columbus to Europe, the tomato became only accepted at the beginning of the 20th century. Main growers today are America, Europe and South Africa.
Description:
The cocktail or cherry tomato is 1.5-2.5cm big, brightly red (a yellow variety in the Netherlands) and somewhat sweeter and more aromatic in taste than normal size tomatoes. Tomatoes ripen well in room temperature.
Marketing :
Cocktail tomatoes are always available. The storage temperature depends on the ripening stage of the fruit. 3/4 ripe fruits may be stored for approx. 14 days at 8 – 10° C. Fruits in earlier ripening stage should be stored at 12 – 15°. Then too, the approximate storage time is 14 days.
Use:
Tomatoes should not be kept too long in the refrigerator, because they lose their aroma and become watery. Soft, dark red fruits are overly ripe. The stem base should be cut out after washing and prior to eating, because it contains the unhealthy alkaloid "solanin" that appears in unripe fruits.
