Pomelo

Home / Origin:

The pomelo is a cross between different grapefruit varieties originating in Israel. Main cultivating regions today are Israel and South Africa.

Description:

The fruit is usually pear-shaped and may reach 'record weights' of up to 2kg. The pulp is greenish, yellow or pink, mostly juicy and pleasantly sweet-sour in taste. Within the fruit, there are several inedible membranes between the segments which may be easily removed from the pulp. The rind is greenish-yellow, becoming light orange in fully ripe condition. It contains the following substances:vitamin C ( 30 – 44 mg ), calcium and iron.

Marketing :

In the marketplace, the pomelo has as of now very little importance and gains only slowly. The end-user does not really know about it. The fruit has relatively good storage capabilities. At room temperature, it may be kept for several months. Although the rind becomes a bit 'wrinkly', the fruit gains in juiciness. However, it can happen that after such a long storage, the fruit becomes bitter. It is stored best at 10 – 15° C and a relative humidity of 90%.

Use:

The fruit is eaten raw only, after peeling of the rind and removing the pulp of the membranes.
